世界各地の伝統社会では,グローバリゼーションが進行するなかで,共通の物質的,文化的基盤が形成されつつある。しかし,その一方では,さまざまな地域で伝統文化,民族文化の復興や活性化が起きているのも事実である。この現象は,単にそれぞれの社会における「伝統の創造」あるいは「過去の文化の残存」と捉えて済まされるものではない。ここにはそれぞれの社会における「伝統」の存続に向けての積極的な関与を読み取ることができる。しかも,「伝統」は新しく創造されるものではなく,連続性のなかで,現代社会にうまく共生する形で再活性化されるものということができる。現代の伝統社会に起きている現象は,現代社会における伝統の「連続性」と「共生」という視点から捉えることによって,理解可能となるのである。
 本書は,さまざまな地域における事例研究をもとに,現代の伝統社会における民族文化の再活性化を現代社会が直面する新しい時代と環境に対抗するための心のはたらきという視点から,伝統文化の「連続性」や社会内の異なる集団間における象徴的連係,あるいは「共生」の構築について考察する。これをもとに,「連続性とは何か」,「共生とは何か」を明らかにし,集団の動態について,文化を鍵として解明し,現代社会における多様な文化の共存のための人類学的および心理学的パラダイムの構築を目指す。
 本書は,北海道大学グローバルCOE「心の社会性に関する教育研究拠点」の研究成果であり,2008年11月1〜2日に北海道大学文学部で開催されたグローバルCOE国際会議,および2003年7月5〜12日にフィレンツェ大学で開催された第15回国際人類学・民族会議の分科会「ポスト・ソヴィエトのトランスユーラシアにおける宗教と自然」で発表された論文を基に4部15章から構成されている。
